In recent years, even decades, home schooling, or the practice of educating your child or children within the home as opposed to sending them to a public or private school, is slowly making its way back to the educational mainstream.

This alternate way to educate elementary and high school children dates back to 1906 in the United States when the Calvert Day School in Baltimore, Maryland offered the "curriculum in a box". They partnered with a National Geographic advertisement during that time. Shortly after five years, almost 300 children used Calvert's instructional materials to home school. About a century later, this method, as well as many other methods and educational materials developed, spread quickly not only within the U.S. but also to 90 other countries all over the globe.

Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Dakota Fanning (a famous Hollywood actress) and Albert Einstein are some, but certainly not all of the notable people who have been home schooled.

All through history, the way home school education has been taught has been quite effective. But, with advancements in technology and the yearning to learn has increased in the home school student, modifications have been made to provide a more stimulating curriculum, encouraging our children to reach for the stars.

Searching through the vast resources available on the world wide web under the subject of home-schooling, it could be positively said that there has been so much improvement on how homeschooling is done through its long history. From the very simple methods and materials, new ones that are more complex are now available.

Think field trips when home schooling your child or children. Going to the zoo will have many benefits to your child's education. How about the library where they can choose books that interest them while learning how the library works. There are so many things that a home school child can experience that public or private school children cannot because of budgets. Spark their interest to learn while not letting them get bored.

Conventional methods of home schooling does not necessarily work for every child. Keep some excitement going on in your home school by using exercises and activities to spark your child's enthusiasm. Modifying the home school experience will keep your child excited about what they are learning.

Home Schooling and the Family

If a survey by the National Center For Education Statistics is to be believed, almost 1.1 million children underwent home schooling in 2005 alone. That is a great deal of children. Not so long ago, homeschooling used to be an extreme statement - something like a declaration of independence.

It was the right-wing Christians who pushed for homeschooling in the 1980's and legalized it in every State. But nowadays the typical homeschooling pupil is not religiously motivated.

Later surveys indicate that parents are quite fed up with the public school system where much of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the damaging environment in school, ranging from drugs and abuse to negative peer pressure.

Because of this, we have a surprising mix of people who form the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their chief aim is providing meaningful and productive education through a means that strengthens the bond between all the members of the family.

All these families have one main thing in common - a long enduring commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children in these families are accorded a primary position. Many believe, and, I think, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their children in a more natural and caring environment.

Public schools can make a child nervous, diffident and downright mean. Children who get their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they reach an age where they can withstand them.

Home-schooling draws the whole family into the quasi religious task of teaching. Everyone is put to work. Both the parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an educational experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going on in their child's head.

Parents also have a greater control over the kind of religious and moral values that the child is taught. Even watching a film together can become an educational experience. Trips to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational as well as recreational.

A home-schooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that often outgoings have to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is necessary. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody becomes involved in the process of saving money.

Just having a parent at home to supervise, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even the husband takes part and there is just no room for complacency.

Yes OK, problems still do sometimes occur, and there will be many misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your children can always rely on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a very rewarding experience.
